The stunning Jefferson Memorial is likely the most photographed building in Washington in the spring. Sitting on the Tidal Basin, it becomes surrounded by blooming cherry trees, a 1912 gift from the people of Japan. Millions of people from around the world have come to admire and photograph the gorgeous blooms every year.
It makes for a festive atmosphere in Washington. A lot of the local hotels and restaurants have cherry-blossom themed drinks, menus and souvenirs. Even the Library of Congress got in on it. I happened to visit this year and came home with a unique porcelain bracelet painted in cherry blossoms and birds—a nice memory of a great day and a unique American celebration!
If you have never experienced Cherry Blossom time in DC, please make it a priority! You can find prospective peak bloom times online—typically March to April. The celebration in Washington includes four week-ends. There are related activities, as well. A favorite is a kite festival at the Washington Mall area that young and old alike enjoy.
