One of the most beautiful and poignant symbols of Arlington, and perhaps of the whole United States, is the Tomb of the Unknown. Made from pure white Colorado marble, it symbolizes to all that we never forget those who gave their lives to preserve our freedom.
I have witnessed the emotional Changing of the Guard many times. But this particular day, I was also moved by one young father standing beside me. I noticed that he himself couldn’t see, but had his little son—probably 2-3 years of age—on his shoulders with a full view of the event. That child would likely never remember it as he grew older. But the son witnessing those few minutes was so important to his father, who had never seen it, that he was willing to miss it himself. I motioned for him to take my place since it would provide a clear view for both and stepped aside. It was the best Changing of the Guard I ever missed.
