This was a day I had looked forward to! Getting up at 5:30 a.m. is never my idea of fun, but I knew today would be worth it. I was at the church early for the 7a.m. start time, yet the parking garage was already filled with hundreds of fellow church-goers. We were there to pack 5,000—yes, 5,000—boxes! Each would hold enough food to feed 10 people a Thanksgiving dinner “with all the fixings” as Pastor Lon Solomon had said. Equally as important, the box would hold copies of the Gospel message.
The morning was a lot of fun. What I liked most was seeing the families turn out. I saw multi-generational families: children as young as four and older folks about 75 years of age or so. All worked together in one gigantic coordinated effort.
From a business standpoint, the efficiency was remarkable. The people worked together seamlessly, with almost automated precision in assembly line fashion. By 9a.m., only filling the delivery trucks with the rest of the packed boxes was left to be done.
My volunteering for the Turkey Outreach event was a “giving back.” What I so admire about MBC is the depth of the teaching and worship there. I leave every service, and I do mean every service, with the sense of knowing God and His Word more. I also admire the incredible generosity of the people who attend there. At the end of the day, not only have I benefited, but it just feels very good to be a part of something that contributes to the community in such a tangible way.
