Seneca Caverns is a striking natural landmark to visit, though I'd never heard of it until I was actually driving through the area. You might like to visit, as well, if you live near or are within driving distance of the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. Located in the Germany Valley, Seneca Caverns was discovered in 1742. In addition to their natural appeal, the caverns were even once used by the Seneca Indians for ceremonial activities.
The site has been closed for the winter months, but will open again to the public this Wednesday, April 4th. They offer guided tours that are about ¾ mile long and take an hour. This would be a unique spot to help bring both history and earth science alive for student groups and adults alike. Moreover, the Caverns personnel will work with teachers to tailor a tour that coordinates with a teacher's lesson plans. As a bonus, teachers tour for free.
The picnic area can make the trip even more affordable for groups and families, though they also offer the option of a restaurant. There is also a gift shop and gemstone mining there. My own girls loved gem mining on a trip through the Cherokee National Forest during one of our summer vacations. It’s a nice way to bring home a reminder of the education acquired that day!
Seneca Caverns and the outdoor activities the surrounding area offers would be a great place to create memories with family and friends. You can access more info about the Caverns, and all you need to know to plan a trip, at www.senecacaverns.com .
