Washington’s Washington Monument

During tourist season, the Mall’s acres of green space will be bustling with visitors from around the globe. I grew up in an area with a steady stream of summer tourists, so I am always excited to see people from the world over descend on Washington, the most significant city on the planet. They bus or walk throughout its ten square miles to experience the ongoing history of American freedom, dine in our plethora of restaurants—many of them world-famous--and, hopefully, make memories that encourage them to return.

The Washington Monument is one of the most visited spots in the city. It sits on the National Mall, with the U.S. Capitol clearly visible at the opposite end. The Potomac sits just beyond at the other. President George Washington was honored not only by the nation’s capital bearing his name, but also by this 555-foot marble obelisk honoring his memory. Erected in 1884, it had to be closed for three years due to needed repairs from the 2011 earthquake. It is once again closed for public touring—this time due to needed elevator repairs. It will reopen again in the spring of 2019. When it does, you most definitely should walk or ride to the top for its spectacular views!

This closure, however, won’t stop people of all ages from enjoying the Monument grounds this year. Often referred to as part of “the nation’s front yard,” I saw remnants of kites flapping in the trees on my two latest trips into town. I had to laugh. Clearly, they had lost the battle with our recent winds! Nevertheless, summer truly is in the forecast, and this and other outdoor activities will be familiar sights on the grounds throughout the warmer days to come.

Hunger, sooner or later, becomes a high priority! Lots of families either purchase from the lines of nearby food trucks that offer every cuisine you can imagine at the moment, or they pack picnics—yours might want to, as well, since the food trucks can get pricey for families. But wherever you obtain it, bring the lunch, bring a blanket, and bring a sense of adventure—leashed dogs and kites are optional, but welcome!
