Five Star Dining in a Five Star Hotel

This past weekend, a friend and I returned to D.C.’s Old Post Office, now known as Trump International. We decided to go on the spur of the moment for dinner. Was it ever worth it—all $150+ was delicious! Granted, it was a special treat, but it does make one appreciate the quality that five stars renders!

We ate upstairs in the overlook in BLT Prime. David Burke is the executive chef, and both the dinner and service were perfect. The restaurant seemed to have more tourists than locals—obviously of no surprise since we were in a hotel. Nevertheless, we locals were made to feel very welcome, in spite of the fact that we had not made reservations and, moreover, were dressed in clothing appropriate for hiking the city.

If you visit, consider the Wet-Aged Filet Mignon and the Ocean Cocktail. Equally as good—no kidding--were the popovers they served beforehand. (If Burke ever hears “You’re fired!,” he could sell them by the bushel from one of the food trucks that line the National Mall.)

BLT Prime also offers a fun side dish called “Couch Potatoes.” Served on a little wooden “couch” with a pot of garlic aioli, humble little potatoes became stars.

Typically I'm too full for dessert, but who cared at that point? I went all out and had the flourless chocolate cake with ganache, salted caramel and ice cream. Every once in a while, a decadent meal at the end of a memorable day is a perfect ending to the week. This certainly qualified, and our spur of the moment decision was worth every incredibly delicious bite!
