Operation Varsity Blues: A Mom and Pop Scam

Operation Varsity Blues is the college admissions scam currently dominating the news. Many of the details are still breaking, but we do know that it involves wealthy—and sometimes famous—parents. Those parents have been willing to pay off any number of people in order to buy their child’s acceptance into an elite college.

Non-athletes were accepted via school teams. Others' SAT or ACT scores were manipulated higher. One family reportedly shelled out a half million dollars for these services! One might think they would have just had the kids do their homework.

Now, those involved have found themselves the objects of a mortifying FBI sting. We’ve seen some of them on television, but the carpet isn’t red. Instead, they are humiliated. They are paying bond money to stay out of jail and face any number of charges—all because of an extraordinary sense of entitlement.

And for every student whose place was bought, another missed the cut. Their families were buying what you are working hard for: an education that helps transition a young person into responsible adulthood. It’s no wonder that America is disgusted.
