Maine’s Portland Head Light

I was able to revisit a couple of favorite places on my New England trip. You will probably recognize this one - the iconic and oldest lighthouse in Maine, the Portland Head Light. It is said to be the most photographed lighthouse in America. It has graced innumerable calendars and travel magazines throughout the years.
Located down a narrow residential road winding through the Cape Elizabeth area, the landscape
unexpectedly broadens to a scenic vista of waves pounding the rocky coastline just on the other side of the lighthouse. The Portland Harbor is typically dotted with small boats and large cruise ships amid the numerous tiny islands of rock that jut above the water, and that's exactly how it was today.
The lighthouse has a storied history. Its first day of operation was at sunset, January 10, 1791. It has now guided navigation there in the harbor for over 200 years. Much of this history is chronicled in the adjacent Museum at Portland Head Light, located in the old lighthouse keeper's home. Portland Head along with Fort Williams - once a military outpost for coastal defense - is a constant draw for tourists, history buffs, artists and photographers.
Portland Head is very affordable for groups or families. Check their website for pricing and hours, and get ready to enjoy a day of unique American history that everyone will enjoy!
