Joining the The Sunrise Club

Sunrise at Acadia National Park was an unforgettable event! Part of that was because I was so cold, despite what I thought had been adequate preparation with multiple layers from head to toe. But fall in Maine is brisk by anyone’s estimation – especially at 4:30.a.m. when a warm bed is a very recent memory.

People travel to Cadillac Mountain in Acadia because it is where the daily sunrise is first seen in the Eastern US. Those who make the effort automatically become part of The Sunrise Club. And that was how I - and about 100 other strangers - ended up on a rocky mountaintop to watch and wait.

The time finally came, and it was worth getting out of bed in the middle of the night for. Streaks of purple,

blue and molten red and yellow began to blaze over the horizon and across the expanse of sea in preparation. It was simply breathtaking. The sun itself finally appeared on the horizon - truly an awe-inspiring sight.

Such splendor and magnificence introduces each and every new day there. If you live in Maine, or get a chance to travel there with your family or perhaps on a class trip, Cadillac Mountain and The Sunrise Club will be waiting. You'll be glad you made the effort.
