Students, I encourage you to watch the Presidential Debate this evening, broadcast at 9 p.m. It will be the first of three such debates and is a much-anticipated face-off between President Donald Trump and his challenger former Vice President Joe Biden who served under President Obama (2008-2016). We will be watching our U.S. Constitution in action, and it will greatly add to your knowledge of both history and current events.
I am always dismayed when I hear the comment that it doesn’t matter who’s in office – politicians are “all the same.” That could not be further from the truth., and you will see that illustrated this evening. These two candidates hold extremely opposite views – and both have governed accordingly.
We as a nation have been the beneficiaries – or victims - of that governance. Just ask anyone who lost his or her job because it was relocated to a cheaper labor market overseas. On the other hand, many jobs have returned to American workers by bringing back our factories and industries over the past three years. But that's just one example. There are loads of important distinctions!
A skilled policy analyst is familiar with history and can immediately boil an issue down to its simplest form and within its proper context. For these two, the basic options are either self-governance and self-determination (President Trump) or being ruled ever more by what is called a “nanny state” (former Vice President Biden).
American voters have historically preferred to make decisions for themselves about their futures, their families, and other matters that directly affect their lives. Tonight we’ll get a better sense of how that might play out in the general election taking place across the country this November 3rd.
So this debate actually very much affects you and your family. It is of grave importance to know about those who have the power to have a say in your future. It is also important for your parents to know what the stakes are and to vote for the candidate who will best reflect and protect their interests. Voting is a valuable right for American citizens – a right envied by much of the world’s populations who don’t have it. Therefore, we should always consider informed voting a sacred honor and duty!
